Hi, I'm Yiyi Wang! I recently organized a "Magic Planet" exhibition for my OC, Dansha 🪐

Before we dive into the magical journey of this "Magic Planet," allow me to briefly introduce my personal IP project—"Dreamwalking".

This isn't a project born overnight; it's more like an ongoing exploration. I'm trying to use stories and art to see if they can bring a little bit of healing power.

The protagonist is named "Dansha," my Original Character (OC). You can imagine her as a guide traversing the virtual world.

Honestly, during this ongoing creative process, what I enjoy most is tinkering with various digital technologies and integrating them. Learning as I go, constantly iterating—it's quite interesting.

My small wish is: while enjoying the fun of creation, to slowly build a relaxing, immersive digital healing corner for friends who also love digital art and ACG culture. 🌌

📋️... Some friends might not be familiar with "OC culture." Simply put, OC means "Original Character." It's a vibrant and creative community where people design and share their own original character stories, with frequent interaction and exchange! Much of my creative inspiration comes from this lively and youthful cultural circle. 💚

Origins: How Did It All Begin? (Some Coincidences + A Bit of Impulse 😉)

The idea for "Dansha's Magic Planet" actually came together unintentionally from a few seemingly unrelated small things:

Inspiration from a relatively successful co-creation attempt

Previously, I held a "Finding Dansha's Loungewear" event, inviting everyone to design casual outfits for my OC, Dansha. The event received an unexpectedly enthusiastic response and many brilliant designs! I'm incredibly grateful to @TourBox and @Posts & Telecom Press for their prize sponsorship back then 🙏. This event showed me the amazing creativity of fellow enthusiasts and the joy of creating content together out of passion. By the way, the outfit Dansha is currently wearing is the winning design from that contest!

A popular activity suggestion from the "circle"

Around that time, people in my fan group often talked about the "Drawing Relay" activity. Simply put, several people form a team, and like a relay race, each person continues creating based on the previous person's artwork, ultimately completing an unexpected piece. This format is very different from solo creation, filled with collaboration, improvisation, and unknown surprises. It's incredibly popular among young art lovers and creators! I thought this format was so fun and perfect for everyone to play together!

A "tech connection" forged at a competition

At a digital art competition, I met the @ALLHOLO team. They have this cool glasses-free 3D technology (based on light field principles, with exclusive optical patents, they've collaborated with artists like Mai Yoneyama 👍). We started chatting and discovered a mutual interest in combining IP with cutting-edge technology – it was an instant click! This sparked the idea of potentially collaborating to merge my OC Dansha with their 3D tech and co-launching a product.

A "venue invitation" from old friends

As it happens, I already knew the two managers from one of the teams responsible for Shanghai Illustration Town (@Between Illustrations). We'd had some pleasant collaborations before, like holding lectures and trying out small exhibition setups. This time, they were planning their April 2025 event schedule and wanted to experiment with new exhibition themes beyond the traditional illustration art festival. So, they approached me and asked if I'd be willing to put on a small-scale OC-themed exhibition to test the offline response to this concept. For me, it was like finding a pillow when sleepy – a perfect opportunity!

So, Here Was the Question…

How could I skillfully weave together these threads—the emotion of the IP, the experimentation with new technology, the community's co-creation, the offline venue invitation, and my own little personal desires—into a story that had soul, was feasible, and also fun?

💡 And so, the concept of "Dansha's Magic Planet" quietly sprouted in my mind.

It wasn't just a name for an event, but more like a container capable of holding all sorts of whimsical ideas. I hoped it would carry:

💚 The sense of mystery and healing inherent to "Dreamwalking"
💡 A dash of curiosity and experimentation with cool new tech
🤝 The joy of playing and creating together with everyone
🏛️ A small world that people could step into and experience firsthand

Of course, turning this idea into reality wasn't something I could do alone. This project was more like a small multi-party collaborative experiment:

Me (@Yiyi Wang): As the IP owner and project initiator, responsible for overall concept planning, world-building, visual design and animation production, organizing and promoting online activities (Drawing Relay), coordinating with all parties, and planning and designing the exhibition content. Basically, the "all-around gofer" 😉.
@ALLHOLO: Technology lead and product co-creation partner. Responsible for the technical implementation, joint design, production liaison, and quality control of the glasses-free 3D night light, and provided glasses-free 3D display equipment support for the exhibition site.
@Between Illustrations (Shanghai Illustration Town): Venue and opportunity provider. Offered the invaluable offline exhibition space, handled most of the material production and on-site execution, making this OC-themed exhibition attempt possible.
Fans and Co-creation Participants: Source of inspiration and content co-builders. Participated in the early loungewear design, the Drawing Relay activity creation, and actively interacted and voted at the exhibition site, becoming a vital source of the project's energy.

Act I: Lighting Up the Stars

(Serene Waters)

IP World-Building: The Birth and Inspiration of the "Magic Planet".IP

The world of Dreamwalking exists in a space interwoven between dreams and reality, science and magic.

I tried to blend elements of mysticism, sci-fi, magic, and art therapy, hoping to create that somewhat familiar yet strangely unfamiliar 'Dreamcore' aesthetic.

I started by defining four core planets, each representing different inner energy fields:

Represents tranquility and peace, like a gentle body of water.
Symbolizes inspiration and fantasy, filled with the flow of creativity.
Brings vitality and hope, like a warm amber-colored veil.
Initially conceived as serene and tranquil, later adjusted to better reflect natural vitality and a sense of healing.

Visually, I strived to find a balance, incorporating the dreamcore, healing, mysterious, futuristic feel of 'Dreamwalking' itself, while giving each planet its own distinct personality.

Making the Stars Move: Telling Stories with Animation 🎬

Concepts alone aren't enough; they need to come alive.

To help everyone intuitively feel the atmosphere of the planets and lay the groundwork for subsequent activities and products, I painstakingly created a series of themed animations.

From a 'Quartet of Destiny' prologue guiding people to choose their 'resonant planet,' to short films delving into the distinct ambiance of each, it was my small attempt at conveying feelings through visuals.

Act II: Sparks Fly!

IP衍生品开发:丹砂 × 裸眼3D小夜灯的技术联姻💡 IP Merchandise Development: The Tech Marriage of Dansha × Glasses-Free 3D Night Light💡

In our collaboration with ALLHOLO, we wanted to try something different, to attempt combining IP with new technology.

Their core is the cool glasses-free 3D technology. As for the medium to carry this tech, both our teams mulled it over quite a bit 🤔. We chose the night light not just because it's a practical vessel, but also because it inherently possesses a gentle, serene quality, perfectly aligning with the healing aspect pursued by the 'Dreamwalking' IP.

This wasn't a simple IP licensing deal, but deep co-design. The night light's warm glow carries the healing sense of 'Dreamwalking', while the glasses-free 3D's stereoscopic light and shadow enhance the mysterious dreamcore atmosphere of Dansha and the Magic Planet, like a miniature fantasy portal. We aimed to combine technology with the IP's core (healing, mystery), enabling the merchandise itself to tell stories and convey emotions.

"痛并快乐着":3D小夜灯的"难产"日记 😅 "Painfully Joyful": The Difficult Birth Diary of the 3D Night Light 😅

Of course, the process inevitably involved some bumps and bruises, you could even call it 'painfully joyful':

The effect was truly 'ground out'! Achieving the ideal glasses-free 3D effect has quite specific requirements for the source image (I won't delve into the technical details here). To output images meeting their technical specs, I had to adjust and export repeatedly, dozens of times (felt like my hairline was receding...). Just the core light panel part went through 3 full rounds of prototyping before final confirmation. The process was quite demanding.
Quality control was a major challenge: Factory production always has surprises (like reworks for the base or content). We could only monitor every step closely with the brand partner, fearing the final effect would be compromised. Communication was the theme song of that period.
The wallet was 'crying' 💸: We needed good results, but also had to control costs. Finding that balance in a first-time collaboration was another headache-inducing problem.

More Than Just a Game: A "Co-Creation Experiment" Sparked by Fan Suggestions 🧪

With the concept, animations, and the cool co-branded night light (perfect as prizes!), how could we get everyone genuinely involved and excited?

That's when the earlier fan suggestion of the 'Drawing Relay' came in handy!

This wasn't just about responding to expectations; it was also a crucial step for me to test the viability of the 'IP + Community + Brand' model.

The rules were simple: centered around the four planet themes, people formed teams (6-9 members per team) and chose a theme to start drawing.

The core prize was our night light, and leveraging the exhibition opportunity at the Deqiu Shanghai International Illustration Art Festival, we hoped to give everyone extra motivation!

The "Black Swan" Arrives: Emergency Rescue for an Unexpected Crisis 🆘

Promotion relied heavily on social media. But then, halfway through the event, the originally planned platform (🐧🐧 short video app) suddenly 'disappeared'... A true 'Black Swan' event 🦢, directly impacting mid-term participation and judging. My initial thought was—it's over... No! It can't be over!

Facing this sudden situation, panicking and complaining were useless. I took a deep breath and told myself: There are always more solutions than problems; the event must go on! 💪 So, I quickly adjusted the strategy:

Shifted judging offline: We simply changed the judging, originally planned based on online data, to voting at the subsequent offline exhibition site. Unexpectedly, this change actually increased on-site interaction.
Loosened rule restrictions: Some teams didn't have enough members (e.g., only 5 people), or their creation format was unique (like combining images and text). We couldn't just exclude them. So I flexibly adjusted the display plan to ensure everyone's work could be seen.

These adjustments definitely added a lot of work (heaven knows how many extra hours I put in), but it was precisely this "forced" improvisation that gave me, an independent artist/rookie curator, the real feeling of my heart "bungee jumping" along with the project 🎢. It also made me understand the old saying – "Embrace change" truly is an essential survival skill.

Imperfect Perfection: Validating the Power of "Co-Creation" Amidst Setbacks ✨

Although the process was bumpy, the final results were still dazzling! The event received many high-quality works; everyone's creativity was astonishing! ✨ Some teams even turned the relay into a short animation, while others used engaging short stories to connect the images. Many participants were so enthusiastic that one person even joined multiple teams!

Act III: Dream Landing

From Pixels to Palpable: Why I Decided to "Meet Offline"?

Frankly, although online interaction is convenient, it always feels like there's a screen separating us, lacking a sense of genuine connection.

A tangible, perceivable physical space not only translates the imagination of the digital world into real sensory experiences but also serves as a collective debriefing for all the friends (creators, fans, brand partners) who participated in this journey, and an attempt to build real connections.

Honestly, facing a 60-square-meter venue as a first-time curator was immense pressure. But the thought of being able to fully present 'Dansha's Magic Planet' made me feel I absolutely had to seize this opportunity. 💪

Building a Base: Not Just Viewing Art, But Making Things Happen with the Audience!

For this exhibition, I wasn't content with just displaying works and products; I had a few 'small goals' in mind:

Build a base: Create a place for friends who love OCs (Original Characters) to meet offline, chat, and even doodle together.
Explore a new path: Starting with Dansha, establish a connection with the venue provider (thanks to @Between Illustrations!) and see how else OC culture's online-offline synergy can be played out.
Co-build an ecosystem: Hope to foster a cultural atmosphere where creators and fans can mutually empower each other and have fun together.

The Curator's Approach: Please "Warp" Through the Exhibition Zones with Me

Based on these ideas, the entire exhibition space design revolved around 'experience' and 'interaction'.

I designed a visitor route, hoping to guide everyone step-by-step into this little 'Magic Planet':

Dansha Worldview Archive

Upon entering the exhibition area, I wanted to introduce Dansha and the "Dreamwalking" world behind her in a less formal way. So, instead of complex explanations, I designed a dialogue-style display board. Visitors could imagine it as me and Dansha chatting nearby, explaining how the world was conceived and how Dansha "grew up" step by step.

Dansha × ALLHOLO Joint Research Lab

Here comes the core zone! This was arguably the main stage where @ALLHOLO and I "made things happen." We blended magic, technology, and everyone's creations together, aiming to craft a space that was both visually appealing and fun.

First, the concept animations were essential: Playing on loop, hoping visitors could quickly grasp the vibe of the four planets.
Second, the main event—the co-branded night lights: The physical night lights finally met the public! To make them look more "luxurious" (not really), I specifically created a dark "starry sky wall" and embedded the night lights like stars.

Then, time for interactive photos: I designed a dedicated themed photo wall, along with four life-sized Dansha KT boards. Each Dansha wore outfits from different periods, carefully styled to look like she was interacting with the audience. Nearby was a super cool glasses-free 3D screen, serving both to showcase @ALLHOLO's technical prowess and as an excellent photo spot.

Finally, check out everyone's art and cast a vote: The previous online Drawing Relay event received 8 submissions in a short time, and I brought these masterpieces to the site. Visitors could admire the creative relay here and also vote for their favorite work.

Designers' Corridor

This area primarily showcased the "wisdom of the masses." First were the results from the previous "Finding Dansha's Loungewear" design contest, which received many love-filled designs. Then, I also "smuggled in" a display of the first program I wrote – the "Dansync" (Dansha Cover Machine), cobbled together to save myself from the agony (mainly of cover typesetting). There was a display board and a short documentary video telling the story of how it evolved from a creator's pain point to something I painstakingly built.

OC Instant Creation Space

The final stop of the exhibition felt more like a new beginning and the interactive heart I particularly valued. This area was entirely prepared for fellow OC enthusiasts.

Fan Interaction Wall: This became a lively corner for everyone to leave messages for Dansha, learn about my (the creator's) updates, make wishes for future events, and grab exclusive wallpaper freebies.
OC Showcase & Sharing Wall: This side was the dedicated stage for creators. Using pre-prepared sticky notes, people shared the settings and stories of their precious OCs. I also designed an interactive prompt board, "What if your OC met Dansha?", to collect various imaginative encounters. Adjacent was the future event brainstorming area, gathering inspiration for the next OC exhibition.

In short, I truly hoped this could become a cozy little hub where everyone could relax, chat, find like-minded friends, and even spark new inspiration. Judging from the on-site response, it did achieve this to some extent. Seeing everyone having fun made me very happy too.

On-Site Happenings: Plans Change, But I Didn't Give Up! 😅

The ideal is plump, reality... well, you know.

From design blueprints to on-site execution, unexpected situations always arise:

The "surprise" of a misplaced wall sticker: For instance, the workers accidentally put up a key background wall sticker in the wrong place... There was no time to change it. What to do? We had to make emergency adjustments on the spot, move exhibits, alter visual guidance, and just push through.
The vanishing "signpost": The installation planned for the entrance to attract attention didn't arrive on time, making the entrance inconspicuous and easy for visitors to miss... Thinking quickly, my partners and I coordinated to adjust the flow, and asked the volunteer angels to use the 'shouting' method to draw people in.
Circuits and the "sauna room": We also encountered hardware issues on site like monitor circuit problems and the exhibition hall being stuffy and hot 🥵. This tested our communication, patience, and problem-solving skills.
Always regrets, but always lessons learned: Although I did my best to solve problems, limited by experience and objective conditions, there were still many imperfections. But that's okay, it's all valuable 'tuition' paid. I'll thoroughly review this experience and strive to do better next time!

Post-Exhibition Musings: Some Experiences and Lessons ✍️

Having curated independently for the first time, I definitely learned a lot and stepped into quite a few pitfalls. Here are a few takeaways:

Less is more, emphasize the key points:
Honestly, most visitors on site are just 'browsing' casually. Large blocks of text and complex technical details struggle to hold attention. Next time, I need to use more prominent headlines, clearer structure, and more eye-catching layouts!
Interaction should be intuitive, lower the barrier to entry:
I found that compared to text-based narrative interactions or setting co-creation that require more thought and are a bit "brain-burning," people on site clearly preferred activities that were immediately hands-on and visually direct. Examples include drawing on a graffiti wall, voting for favorite works, or quickly sharing OC highlights on sticky notes. This might be because the offline environment is fast-paced, and overly complex interactions can indeed be daunting. So, Lesson Learned: Future offline event interaction design should focus more on immediacy, ease of use, and visualization, allowing everyone to participate easily and happily, achieving quick satisfaction.
Guidance must be BIG! EYE-CATCHING! INDEPENDENT!
This time, I deeply realized that any guidance information requiring visitors to scan codes, interact for photos, or participate in activities must be extremely prominent. Simply sticking it on the wall isn't enough; it gets easily lost in the information flow. Next time, important QR codes, activity instructions, photo pose suggestions, etc., must be presented using independent, large-sized KT boards or similar formats, placed directly "in front of" the audience, ensuring they see it at a glance and easily understand what to do.
Curation is just the beginning; on-site adaptation is the norm:
No matter how well-planned, there will always be surprises on site. Maintaining patience, actively finding solutions, and keeping a mindset of 'stay calm, we can win'—this is probably an essential quality for a curator.

Finale: Starlight Never Fades

Phew... Finally managed to review the whole process. "Dansha's Magic Planet" was truly an attempt packed with information and immense challenges for me. As an independent artist used to focusing solely on creation, this time I was forced to level up a whole bunch of new skills like curation, design, technical liaison, project management... Although the process was often accompanied by cries of "Help me!" and "This is too hard!", looking back, it was indeed real, tangible growth.

The Road Ahead? Want to Keep Chasing the Stars 🔭

This "Magic Planet" landing was just one stop on the "Dreamwalking" journey. It showed me more possibilities and filled me with more anticipation for the future:

Continue telling good stories: The "Dreamwalking" worldview still has much to explore. I want to keep refining the stories of Dansha and her companions, experimenting with interesting narrative methods (need to get those story animations done soon!).
Connect with more "interesting souls": The collaboration with @ALLHOLO and @Between Illustrations was very pleasant. In the future, I want to keep an open mind and see if I can spark new collaborations with more interesting brands, tech providers, and artists, making IP crossovers even bolder.
Running on passion, but also needing "sustainability": This experience also clarified how to better plan hybrid online-offline OC-themed events that can both serve fellow enthusiasts well and allow the entire ecosystem to operate more healthily.

Finally, I Still Want to Say Thank You! 🙏
